 About US
Mission Statement
All children deserve to live in a safe and permanent home. Colonial CASA provides child advocacy services by way of well-trained community volunteers who advocate on behalf of community children that have been found to be abused and neglected. Colonial CASA works to ensure that while these children are within the court’s supervision, they are safe, receiving the necessary services in a timely manner, and ultimately will live in a safe and permanent home.
History
Colonial CASA is part of a national network of 73,860 advocates who serve in more than 950 CASA programs across the US. Nationally, CASA advocates served an estimated 288,460 abused and neglected children during 2003. A CASA is a trained advocate from the local community that watches over and advocates for abused and neglected children that have found themselves in the juvenile court system through no fault of their own. CASA advocates ensure that a child does not get lost in an already overburdened legal system. CASA advocates remain on a case until the child is placed in a safe, permanent home, whether that is returned home, placed with a relative or ultimately adopted. For many children, their CASA is the one constant adult presence in their life.
Colonial CASA accepted its first case in April of 1996. Since then our advocates serve on an average of 100 children a year. On an annual basis advocates donate approximately 9,000 hours of service to the program and the community. Colonial CASA advocates serve children in both Williamsburg and James City County. CASA advocates are tasked with working with numerous local agencies, all of which have some sort of role in the child’s future. CASA advocates are trained to work with all parties in order to gather information that will ultimately be submitted to the Juvenile court judge.
